Great article

I think it is short and to the point and perfect for anyone who just wants to know what it is.
I am going to move the widget now.

Opinion

Hey Rachelle,

The articles is good and matches the criteria from the outline. It says on the outline to present a bibliography of websites or articles that would help someone understand this particular tool/application. I think that short little article does just that. Although it is not in-depth , it does provide a clear definition of what library thing for libraries is. So yes, I think it's good material and should definitely be on our bibliography.

Librarything for libraries

Hey Guys, I found this wonderful explaination of what librarything for libraries is all about. It is rather short but to the point. Do you guys think that matters?? http://web.ebscohost.com/ehost/pdf?vid=4&hid=104&sid=6a8cf60c-b190-430d-ba92-9eb556efdbda%40sessionmgr110

Tomorrow

Tomorrow sounds good. I should be almost ready to present my contribution.

Draft

So I decided I wont be doing a draft... too time consuming to write it up just yet. But if Tricia will be here on tue 17th then perhaps we can come together to regroup and demonstate our parts together and critique that way....

Tricia's Part

Excellent work Tricia.

Only comment, is if you could drop the $25.oo lifetime membership fee, as an add in to the part when you are describing the free membership.

Local

Hello ladies,

I was wondering if it is possible for the two of you to add your location to your profile. I am trying to use the Local Members tab as an example in my part of the presentation, unfortunately no one in Edmonton has made their location public. Of course, as I am in the middle of typing this I have just remembered that Tricia lives in Sherwood Park. Anyways, I guess it would be somewhat humorous to see only two members. We are a committed bunch.

Also, I think I made a mistake. I was using the event tab and created an event at the Grant MacEwan City Centre Campus, for our Web 2.0 Presentation. Check it out, I don't know hopefully no one pays attention to it.Regardless, I limited it to the students of INFM 202. Anyways, even if people do take it seriously, I think it will present a flaw in library thing. This shows that you do not need to have any real authority to post events at a venue. In fact, anyone can edit the MacEwan City Centre Library venue information because no one has "claimed"control of the venue information. A possible example of a library using this tool poorley?

I looked over your draft Tricia, I have some constructive critisism...... although I still dont like the word critisism, hopefully just some helpful points...

Intro when you say "things" I think it would be a clearer definition to say books, and would shorten it up a smidge. Although you do address this in a later sentence, so if there's a certain tone and style your trying to convey, keep it.

profile page
I also think for general knowledge it may be beneficial to show the bottom of the page where friend requests are found. Also, where to locate your own reviews, as you touched on where to find member reviews. I dont know if you guys think this is relevant?

the home page - there are only 2 blogs - library thing blog & Thingology. However, there are numberous blog *posts*

I think you answered what was supposed to be my bullet. library 'situation,'is a bit vague as to which question you are answering. I think. I thought I had -explanation of how this tool could be useful to you as a library 'professional'- However, the fourth bullet is more for- explaining how it can be used in a libray 'setting'-, such as being able to add 'librarything for libraies' and add reviews without even leaving the catalogue. The 3rd bullet using it as a 'professional" would be like using it as readers advisory and such. Geoff will be showing us examples of librarything in action as well as not in aciton.

"how could this tool be used in a public library situation? Geoff will talk about the integrated catalogs that some libraries are using. this is the most obvious use and librarything has breated a special area - librarything for libraries just for this. I would like to talk about using librarything in a public library as a reader's advisory tool."

Perhaps this is just confusing me slightly. It seems like Geoff will be talking about using it in a library setting (using an integrated catalogue) and I am confused if he is supposed to be talking about using it in a libray 'setting' (library thing for libraries) or if you are cause you touched on it, or if I am.

Perhaps the 4th and 5th bullet can be combined,Knock both out at once? Or just partly combined. Or keep it separate for oral but either way the two are linked. One explains, while Geoff shows an example without the explaination and then breaks off on it not being used effectivly.

Everything else looks AWSOME!!! I hope this all makes sense. Once I have clarification on which bullet I should be covering I will get a dreaft out ASAP. So far I understand the TALK, GROUPS, BLOG. I am further investigating the wikithing!!

My thoughts

I am not sure if I will be able to make Thursday's class and I am for sure going to miss Tues Nov 17th class. I will "beef up" my profile to make sure and use all the options that are available. I will also send an email right away with what I have so far for my part of the presentation. Please feel free to comment and put in changes where you see necessary.

Stumbled on Random Article

I found this article, which may or may not be of relevence depending on what exactly we decide to do. I know that for the assignment we need to have an example of libraries using our software tool effectivly (or not) and I thought this may tie in somehow...

From what I remeber volunteering at parkdale school OPAC is a database that hold information on books, periodicals, etc., including publication info and descriptions of books? Although the wikipedia definition is telling me that I may be thinking of something else... but you know wiki.... it may or maynot be correct :)

After the exam

I was thinking that maybe we could get together after the exam and talk about what area of Librarything we are most interested in. Perhaps we could divide the software into three areas and each discuss our area as we do show and tell on a laptop? Any other ideas? I will also bring a summary of the important things that I learned from the articles I found.

Okay so I figured out how to add a "thingie" (their words not mine) but I have not fiqured out how to add a widget to the blog which looks really cool. I will try again later. I am still working on reading the articles and taking notes from them . I am not finding them that helpful in navigating the site, I found the tour and the intro much more informative. I really like the Zeitgeist with the member recommendations to my library. I think it has alot of potential for what to read next.

On the blog

Hi I finally registered, it was painful. I got some articles from the databases and I will summarize and put notes up on the blog before Friday. I will spend some time playing around this weekend to get an idea of Librarything and then maybe we can connect the following Tuesday or Thursday to see how we want to present and what areas each of us will concentrate on. I don't think I will see you guys until Thursday as I am in the "to Z" class today.
